Right near the beginning, the author has given the definition of abject:
abject: utterly hopeless, miserable, humiliating, or wretched: abject poverty.
Unfortunately many of his readers did not get the humor.
For those teaching programming languages, it will be an interesting exercise to print a copy of that post, including the comments and ask students to identify those comments which missed the joke.
